Breastfeeding Tips and Items
At the hospital. I didn’t have any milk the first day. I was worried as breastfeeding is very important to me. I was very exhausted after having a c-section and I didn’t have much energy so I didn’t try breastfeeding or pumping. By the second day, I was determined to start trying, so I began pumping using my Medela breastpump but nothing came out! I was so disappointed but I didn’t give up. Every four hours or so, I tried again and I would pump for about 10 minutes even if nothing came out. By the end of the day, little drops started to come out and I was so excited! By the morning of the third, I had what you see in the pic below. As you probably already know, colostrum milk is nutrient dense and full of antibodies. Because I didn’t have enough, for the first 5 days at the hospital, we fed her formula and whatever breastmilk I could produce at that time. The color is so pretty, don’t you think? It amazes me how the color is so bright. The human body is so interesting!

At the postnatal care, I continued to pump as my baby wouldn’t latch on properly. She would only drink by the bottle and was very fussy. She sometimes latched on but only for a short time. In general, she would only drink by bottle. However, as days went by, I was producing enough pumped milked so that by day 10, I was making enough to not feed her formula anymore and only feed her with the pumped breastmilk.

As you can see, the color of the breastmilk changed in time. By about day 7, the milk color started to look more like the picture above. It was quite frustrating that Sophie didn’t want to latch on to the breast and only wanted to drink expressed breastmilk from the bottle. But slowly in time, Sophie started to latch on better and for longer periods of time. Later, it was no problem getting her to latch. Ironically, by week 8, Sophie was refusing to drink by a bottle! So even though it was the same breastmilk, she wouldn’t take the bottle. Until that time, she had taken the bottle during the day by the nanny and was breastfed at night by me. Since I started working by week 4, it was the only way. But as weeks went by, it became harder and harder to feed her by bottle. It is what people call “nipple confusion.” Not all babies go through it, but some babies like Sophie strongly prefer drinking only by one method and refused any other way. I had to make a choice of whether I would have Sophie only take directly by breast or train her to take the bottle by only giving her by the bottle. That would mean I would never be able to feed her by breast again. This was a very difficult choice for me. In the end, I decided to do exclusive breastfeeding since she liked it so much. This meant that I had to change my work schedule around and luckily I was able to rent a space in the same building as my work. So I was able to organize it so that I could take a 1 hour break during the middle of my work day and feed her.

At 4 months, I had a lot of extra breastmilk especially since I was exclusively breastfeeding and I didn’t need the milk that I had stored. Also, each morning even until when I am now writing this (which is 5 months), I pump in the morning before I feed Sophie. I was worried that the breastmilk would go to waste and so I looked online and found a great Facebook group here in Seoul, Korea. If you are a parent in Seoul and want to find a good community to ask advice or if you have milk you want to donate, I recommend the following group on Facebook.

I posted my extra milk here and I was able to donate the extra milk I had. It was really easy. I got a styrofoam box; I bought some ice packs on Coupang and I used the CJ 택배 App. I was surprised that they were able to deliver the breastmilk safely without it melting. I heard that frozen food/items get stored in a freezer when getting delivered.

Increase your Milk
Ways to Increase your Milk
- At 6 months, I started to work even more and my body started to feel weak. My milk supply suddenly went down and I was so sad. I had so much supply in the past that I didn’t predict this would happen. Since then. I’ve been more diligent about trying to keep my supply up. I’ve been taking more care of my body by resting more and eating healthier.
- I’ve also increased my daily calorie intake so I eat more healthy snacks during the day. I also take my daily vitamins more rigorously and drink pumpkin juice packages that you can buy online. There is no sugar in them and the carbohydrates content is low. I also purchased some vitamins recommended by a friend in Canada who also had some problems with her milk supply. She said it worked for her so I bought them online. The first vitamins is called Goat’s Rue and the second is called Moringa. I have also been taking a daily postnatal gluten free multivitamin that I found through research called Rainbow Light. I’m not sure what exactly is increasing my supply these days, but it could be the combination of all the things I have been doing like taking care of my health and taking my vitamins more rigorously! This shows how important it is for mothers to take care of their bodies. We often put our babies first and overwork ourselves. In the end, this doesn’t benefit the baby and so we must understand the value of health and take steps towards maintaining it. I also started waking up at 6:00am to pump. Before I woke up at 8:00am, pumped and then fed Sophie. But these days, as I am trying to increase my milk supply, I pump at 6:00am and then feed at 8:30am. I also feed more often in general. Her main feeding times are the same as before but if she seems hungry I will breastfeed her for a short time sort of like a snack in between her feeding times. The general rule is the more you feed or pump, the more your supply will increase.

Breastfeeding Tips (모유 수유 팁)
Many people ask me how it was possible for me to produce so much breastmilk when I first started. Here are some tips that I hope can help you.
Of all the tips the MOST important one is to breastfeed and pump as much as possible starting from the start. You must pump every three or four hour even at night. Although not a lot will come out at the beginning, it’s important to keep pumping at least every four hours. So even if your baby latches well from the beginning after she is done feeding you should need pump after. If your baby refuses to take the breast for whatever reason, you still need to pump. Pump, pump, pump, pump! Some mommies don’t match well with a pump but in general most moms should be able to increase their supply the more they pump as the body is engineered to make more milk when it demands more. It is simply based on supply and demand so if you pump more, the body will think that your body needs to produce more and so your milk increases.
Pump ASAP
- bring your breastpump to the hospital and start pumping day one if possible.
- don’t be discouraged if nothing comes out the first few days; keep pumping every four hours
- be sure to sterilize all the parts of the breast pump as well as bottles before you go. The hospital will not have a place for you to sterilize stuff.
- Pump for a minimum of 10 minutes but you could pump for up to an hour in the first month if you really want to up your milk supply. There were many times I pumped for an hour long determined to up my supply. I basically pumped until not a single drop came out.
- Remember that your body works on supply and demand so the more you pump, the more your body will produce. This is especially important in the first month as your milk production becomes established.
- Pump every three or four hours or however often the baby is eating. Usually newborns feed every two hours so you should be pumping more often. This is crucial. Every night I got up just to pump.
- After 2 months, I was exclusively breastfeeding and I had a good milk supply so I tried to train my body to go longer periods of time without pumping so that I could sleep better. It was painful at the beginning when I didn’t pump for long periods of time because my breast would feel engorged with milk. But now I can go 8-10 hours without pumping and it’s not too uncomfortable. At first I tried 6 hours, then 7 hours and so on.
- Use the small baby gause handkerchief to absorb the leaking milk. I wear a tight fitted tanktop and put about 3 on each side inside of my tank top as it’s of course uncomfortable to wear a bra to bed.
- Even though you breastfeed the baby, continue to pump if possible. Starting from about 4 months, I was able to sleep longer periods of time. So when I woke up, my breasts felt fuller so every morning I would pump before I fed Sophie.
Baby Positioning
- put ur baby completely on her side so that her whole body is facing you
- put a rolled up towel by her back side. So she stays in place.
- put a towel underneath her head like a pillow to prop her head
- make sure her nose isn’t stuffed into your breast so that she can breath comfortably. More your at an angle so that the nose tilted up. If your lying down, usually you can move down a little and this will fix the problem.
- use a small cloth when holding the back of her head so that she doesn’t get too hot when fighting with you to stay still
- put a few small clothes under your boob to hold ur boob in place once the baby latches so that you can free your hand
- put a pillow behind the small of ur back so that you are in the right position and upright rather than leaning back
- put a foot stool by ur feet so that feet are comfortably flat and stable
- play soothing music
- no matter how much she cries and doesn’t want to latch, keep ur voice calm and happy. I would say things like, “you can do Sophie! Good job Sophie.” Always keep the environment light and happy. Don’t let the baby control the environment.
- for practice, in the first few weeks, give some by the bottle first to calm her and then give her the breast so that she isn’t in such a hurry.

Breastfeeding Cushion(모유 쿠션)
* Price Stamp (Oct 2020)
This one is expensive, sturdy and uses higher quality material. The cover is like a fake leathery type material so it’s easy to just wipe and clean.

I found this link from the same company. This is much cheaper I think because of the cover material, but I’m sure it’s similar. If I knew about this beforehand, I would have just bought this one. It also comes in different colors.

This bra is the best! Haha I use it everyday. There is velcro so it’s very easy to adjust to your size. Most importantly, you have the freedom to use your hands while doing this tedious task. I didn't include the picture but you can see it through this link.

Medela is a very famous American brand. It works great and it’s easy to use. I bought this first, but later I was able to get another breastpump for free through a government run program. It is called Unimom and I was so surprised by how good it was considering the price being so much more reasonable. However, I found that the Medela pump pumped out more than the unimom when my milk supply was low. If your milk supply is high and your not concerned about output, then the unimom is sufficient but if you want the most output possible than Medela is the better brand. I guess price makes a difference.

This is Unimom, the breastpump that I got from the government program. I needed one for my work and one for my home. This one ended up having advantages and disadvantages compared to the Medela. First off, the Unimom is portable so you’re not stuck in one spot while pumping but you can move around when you need to. The Medela is also portable but the strength lessens a lot when you use the battery instead of the plug. To add, the Unimom machine itself is very small. It runs on USB 5 pin so you don’t need to worry about batteries.

The best part of the Unimom are these milk bags that you can attach directly to the pump! That saves time in washing another set of bottles which you need in most other pumps. You can use bottles for this pump too and then pour it into a bag but why would you when you can just put it directly in a bag! I was amazed by how innovative their products were. Unimom is also American, but for some random reason the Unimom items are easily available in Korea whereas the Medela products are not so easy to find and they are more expensive. All in all, Medela is the better product in terms of quality and output. But I also recommend Unimom for those who would like to find a reasonably priced product.

When you have a baby in Korea, you get to choose from a variety of baby items. I’m so glad I chose this one. It’s the best one for sure among the other free products that you can choose from! I’m not sure if foreigners are eligible for this but since I married a Korean I was able to do so.
